Atom Gear... Is it right for you?
Atom Gear has been out on the market now for nearly a month and the response has been very interesting. Getting feedback from many different types of skaters, from fresh meat, intermediate to experienced derby folk alike. Atom Gear is just entering the protective side of roller derby. At Atom we feel we make the best wheels in derby, some people disagree and just like our wheels, our gear is not for everyone. As we continue to get feedback from skaters, coaches and dealers, we will continue to refine, perfect and expand the Atom Gear line over the year.
Our pads were designed for derby, not skateboarding. Derby skaters cross their legs in order to cross in a corner to gain speed. This need to crossover is a major factor in roller derby, as is the need for max maneuverability and agility. Atom Gear provides a lower profile knee pad that makes it easier to cross, so you're not standing upright to cross over your knee pad. Maintaining a lower center of gravity makes you more stable on your skates. Having the knee pad being flexible and fitting to your knee allows you to have better agility and maneuverability as a jammer and blocker.
Women are more likely to have knee injuries as our ligaments are softer, therefore more prone to tearing. By us making our knee pads to feel like a brace/gasket, this allows for better stability of the knee.
Learning to fall safely while skating is a technique definitely worth mastering! Doing double knee falls is NOT the correct way to land. Nor is purposely sliding on your knee pads. There IS a better (and MUCH safer) way! If you want more stability, maneuverability, flexibility, agility, comfort and a lower profile, our pads ARE definitely for you! Atom Gear was made for skating and we can only hope skaters will reassess how they fall, limiting knee falls to an absolute minimum to protect from injuries! Skateboard pads were made for double knee falls on ramps and out in the street. Atom Gear is made for skating, and has protection if you happen to fall on your knee accidentally.
