2011 Highlights: My home team took the opening season championship, and Dallas Deception ended 2011 ranked #5 in the Men’s Roller Derby Association.

Career Highlights: Participating in the MRDA Championships in New York was an amazing experience. And having been elected to the office of Director of Member Relations for the MRDA is an honor. But the highlight of my career was when my son surprised me by claiming that I was going to lose a bout because I was going to be skating against some of his favorite skaters. Initially, I was proud that my son (who is 9) was as excited as I was about the sport I loved. And then I won the bout. Booyah, kiddo. Your dad is better than your derby favorites.

Other Sports Played: Growing up I played soccer, tennis and competed in gymnastics. In college I took classical guitar and played in bands for about a decade afterwards. And then my wife introduced me to derby.

2012 Goals: Increase Deceptions ranking nationally and return to the Championships, and bring home that trophy. I’m also looking for a repeat at home, taking The Brotherhood to the Championships again, and keeping that trophy.

Favorite Sports: Derby, skating, soccer, tennis, mountain biking, martial arts and football of course. GO COWBOYS! (I have a personalized jersey that says MCNASTY on the back.)

Greatest Athletic influence: Tatu (Antonio Carlos Pecorari)

My Dream as a Derby Player is to: I am part of a team that competes at a high level both at home, and nationally. I have a role in the growth and future of the sport I love. I share this wonderful experience with my wife and family. As far as I am concerned, I’m living the dream.

Three Words That Describe Me Are: Intelligent, funny and lethal.

Best Advice I've Ever Received: The only way you can fail is if you do not try. The only way you can be stopped is if you quit. Success comes from effort. Push yourself to always try, and never quit.

Strangest Superstition/Habit: Every time, without fail, while on the line before the first whistle of the first jam, I realize that I have to go to the bathroom. Even if I’ve just gone, it remains the same. So every time, I look at whoever is closest to me and I tell them, “I have to pee.” After the whistle the sensation is gone and it doesn’t return for the rest of the bout.

If I Could Play Derby Anywhere in the World it would be: The MRDA offices. These don’t exist as a singular structure, but if it did, there would be a track.

(How) Did You Pick Your Jersey Number?: I was stuck not knowing what to pick, but I did know that I didn’t want a big number. Something that was less than 18 or so. None really had significance for me, so I just took them all.

My Favorite Thing About Atom Wheels is: In other sports that I have played, I’ve found that my experience has been that player performance was paramount, and my equipment was just equipment necessary for the sport. Derby is different, and that first time I put on a set of Jukes, my game changed. The Juke’s, and later 2.0’s and other Atom wheels, became the foundation everything else is built upon. They let me control whether I want to go fast, slide hard or burn through the corners.
