Standard (44mm) VS. Narrow (38mm) wheels
The standards for quad wheels were concluded back when competitive quad speed skating determined the quality and performance of all wheels. Speed remains an integral part of determining a high-performance wheel. Atom continues to follow the competitive guidelines, shifting gears toward Derby, Speed, Jam. Since 1991 quad speed skating has declined, the importance of quality quad wheels diminished. 44mm is a standard width quad wheel designed first and foremost for high-performance speed skating on 100 meter oval tracks similar to ice speed skating. This width is used throughout all disciplines of roller skating. Reason for this width was to maximize the amount of surface contact at high speeds. Keep in mind speed skating is not stop and go.

38mm is a narrow profile that has been widely used in the roller hockey industry for years. Atom takes pride in their narrow designs. We know that in order to perform at a high level you must be able to grip, maneuver, turn your feet over and react quickly. Atom flat track formulas allow skaters to increase roll with substantial grip characteristics. We specifically designed 38mm wheels for the advanced derby skater looking to optimize grip, roll and agility. Flat track derby is substantially smaller than speed tracks, making the product dynamics unique. Our formulas allow narrow wheels to grip better than our competitors wide wheels, we guarantee it.
